The History of Lytton Park

Long before it became one of Toronto’s premier neighbourhoods, Lytton Park began as a 200-acre farm owned by John MacDougall, a United Empire Loyalist. Residential development started when the Snider family built the first house at 744 Duplex Avenue in 1828. Today, Snider House is a celebrated landmark, the oldest surviving building in North Toronto.

Lytton Park is also where Glen Castle once stood on the hill overlooking what is now Glen Castle Street. A nearby racetrack opened in 1887 just south of Glengrove Avenue and west of Yonge Street but closed just two years later.

In 1886, the Metropolitan Street Railway saw vast potential for development and purchased the 200-acre Beatty Farm to form the Glen Groves Estate subdivision. The first homes in the area began construction from the late 1890s to early 1900s. The neighbourhood then became part of the Town of North Toronto before being annexed by the City of Toronto in 1912.
